Long-Time Reader, First-Time Blogger

Is it normal for a first-time blogger to be so totally concerned about visitors that he/she constantly reloads the hit-tracker to see if anybody else has come to look? I would think it is fairly normal, and that the newness will wear off a bit after a while.

I asked on Twitter what would be a good sniglet to describe that process, and thanks to bfelliott, the intrepid "This Week in Doctor Who" writer, for coming up with a good one! Thus, I will tell you that I am suffering from "Compulseblog", or as he describes it, "when you have a need to keep checking to know if your blog is read." I would add "uncontrollable" before "need," but he's definitely got the right idea.

Hopefully this will pass in a week or so.

Not sure what a sniglet is? Either you didn't grow up in the 1980s or don't know who Rich Hall is. Take a look here.

  1. Dave, I've been writing my blog for 7 months now, just over really, and I still obsess over whether it's been read and by who, and blah blah blah. I'm emailing you a couple links that will make or break your day.

  2. Thanks for the links. :) I do use a good statcounter, and I've got Google Analytics set up too. Not sure I want to have ads, though, because of the differing tax issues from the States. This is more for just fun. I thoroughly understand why you have ads on yours, though.

I'll have to look into the other link you sent.

    Thanks for the advice!

  3. Hey, I'm reading it! I'm just trying not to comment constantly. I'm a compulsive commenter. I've been thinking of starting a blog myself, but maybe I don't need another thing to be obsessed with...

  4. Hey Sara!

You can comment as much as you like. I don't mind. :) It's nice to have some loyal readers.

It's easy to obsess, isn't it? Maybe when you get out of school? :)

  5. See, that is where you are confused. Check out that site, there is no money involved.

  6. I was talking about the AdSense link you sent...which I see now you didn't send. Wow, was I awake when I read your email? LOL

Anyway, I'll definitely look into them when I get the chance.
