Are you obsessed with Social Media?

I love the Mashable blog, as I've said many times before.

Today's article of interest is about quantifying our obsession with Social Media (Facebook, Twitter, etc).  I thought I would go more "light-hearted but interesting" since yesterday was a bit of a heavy topic.

Some of the numbers are astounding!

"From the time we wake up in the morning to the moment we call it a day, and every moment in between (think bedroom, bathroom and dinner table), were checking in on our favorite social media sites.
This conclusion comes from data gathered by an independent study (commissioned by Retrevo), which surveyed 1,000 online individuals.
Per the report, our Facebook and Twitter activities continue even after weve hit the hay, with 48% of respondents checking in on activity when they wake up in the middle of the night or as soon as they wake up in the morning. Unsurprisingly, these night owl social media behaviors skew heavily toward those under the age of 25."
But that's not the truly unbelievable part. A couple more facts just boggle my mind:
  • 24% of respondents under the age of 25 don't mind using digital communication while on the toilet.
  • 11% of respondents under the age of 25 don't mind being interrupted with an electronic communication while having sex! (it's bad enough that 6% of those over 25 don't mind!)
  • 28% of iPhone users update Facebook/Twitter before getting out of bed.
I'm glad to say that I don't do any of those (while I don't mind reading a book on my iPhone in the john, I certainly wouldn't be Tweeting!)

Go to the Mashable page for some even more mind-bending data.

It's a fact that we are increasingly tied to our technology, and also the social contact of "staying in touch" via Facebook, Twitter, or whatever.  More and more people are succumbing to the urge to join the rest of the online world and get connected to what everybody else is doing.

What about you?  Do you fall into any of the subjects mentioned in the Mashable post?  Do you tweet before you get up in the morning?  Do you get up in the middle of the night to use the bathroom and, having done your business, check Facebook to see if anything's new? before going back to bed?

Or do you just have some thoughts on all of this?  Inquiring minds want to know!

  1. That is very funny, but really, at the same time, kind of sad too. I can honestly say that I have not done any of those things, nor could I see myself doing them in the future. I can tell you that NO type of communication happens for me until I've had my morning coffee. :)

Some of those facts - yes, they do boggle the mind!

  2. It is kind of sad, isn't it? :)

I do have to admit that one of the first things I do in the morning is check the computer, unless I'm running late. But I am a pretty frequent user.

    Just not during sex/bathroom breaks!

  4. I guess it IS kind of sad. The technology here is not that far I guess. I mean iPhones are so damn expensive as well as not many people would use the phones to get online. Plus facebook and Twitter are also not that popular yet.

And you know what? I feel it is good that somehow we fall behind with social media stuff.

Though okay, I admit, I check my e-mails before I get out of bed, and sometimes even blog comments :D

But no more than that :D

  5. Yikes. I'm not even going to say how many of these categories I fall into. :D

It's really bad. Maybe you should start holding some sort of Media Management Anonymous Meetings on your blog to help some of us that ARE under 25. :)

  6. Wow, so many comments! That's what happens when I'm away from the blog for a day. :)

Mansi: I did read that, and thought I had left a comment, but it doesn't appear that I did. Yes, we are thinking along the same lines. :)

Lena: LOL so you're almost with the rest of us, and would be if the technology would catch up? :)

Marty: I keep forgetting that you're so young! I feel old. :P

And c'mon, you can tell us how many categories you fit...we'll never tell.

I'm open to holding the meetings! But somebody else has to bring the refreshments.

  8. well Dave I'm happy to say I don't fall into any of these categories!! I do turn the computer on in the morning after getting up & usually after at least one cup of coffee! As far as #2 on your list goes....I can't imagine anyone stopping just to tweet...oh well I guess I'm naive!! =D

    Thanks & Hugs,

    Bill

  9. Bernadine: Yeah, Marty definitely has to bring the refreshments, though I might be able to get the chips and dip.

Bill: Not naive, just normal! At least so far. I can imagine what those tweets are probably like. Lots of moaning.

    Ouch, I'm bad.
