Do you watch TV online or on a TV?

Another great Mashable article states that people's TV viewing is shifting to the web.
"A survey of 1,000 U.S. consumers showed that more of us than ever before are choosing to watch TV shows on websites such as Hulu rather than on a TV. For younger folks, a full 83% said they watched some, most or all of their TV programming online."
For some reason, this is amazing to me. Maybe it's because I'm in Canada and nothing I'm interested in is available online (or, let's just say, nothing I'm interested in online is on TV. *nudge* *nudge* *wink* *wink*). I knew watching TV shows online was becoming popular, but 83% of all people under 25 watch at least some of their TV online? That's phenomenal.

Right now, even if Hulu and the like were available in Canada, I don't think I would change my viewing habits much. There's something about a 42-inch HD TV as compared to a 21-inch monitor that just says "Watch hockey on the TV."

Then again...
"The survey concludes that 'online TV viewership is on the rise, and people are tired of high-priced programming[...] With the advent of Internet-capable TVs (starting to appear on the market) and the dissatisfaction with satellite and cable service (at least with the hefty monthly bills), we will likely see increasing attraction toward online offerings in the years to come.'"
So who knows how long my resistance will last?

And what do you think? How much TV do you watch online? Or via DVD boxed sets?

  2. I have a "Share This" gadget on it instead. That should be just as good. Definitely a lot of choices in that one.

  3. Hi Dave!

I don't watch much of either really. If I watch something online it's because I missed something I wanted to watch on tv, but that is rare as I don't watch much tv except for maybe some shows on Discovery, NatGeo, and Disney. Not much interests me anyway as I just don't have time to sit down and relax like I want to. I used to watch a lot of tv a couple years ago and that was all done offline.

    Happy trails!

  4. You sound like you're really busy, from reading your blog. Not surprised you don't have a lot of time for it.

Whether that's good or bad depends on your perspective. LOL

  6. I don't really watch shows online. I tend to just rely on my DVR. The only times I've watched shows online is if for some odd reason my DVR failed to record it. Also another thing I've been doing has been watching shows on my TV through Netflix via Roku...I <3 technology! :)

  7. I watch it on the Internet or Apple TV. We don't have cable because we live too far out in the boonies and satellite was a rip off.

  8. Anahid: I wish I had that option for our TV! Though CTV does have some of their shows online, but I don't watch anything on that channel. :)

Jenny: that sounds like a big boon for you! It's always good that you can watch it when you want to, too.

  10. Thanks, Gasai! Good to see another Canadian blogger here too. :)

We don't really have that many TV options on the Net up here, do we?

  11. Hooray for the Canadian Bloggers!! I prefer to watch TV on an actual Television but with kids and life thrown into the mix sometimes you just can't catch that favorite show. Curse you NBC and "that content is not available in your geographic region" nonsense. Where I am in Canada I could hit the States with a frisbee if I wanted to. Thank goodness for CTV who now makes their line-up available online!

  12. Yeah, it's definitely a great thing for CTV. Their entire line-up is online? That's definitely cool.

Too bad the only thing I watch on CTV is CSI. LOL

But we have a DVR, so that's not a bad thing.
