Saturday MST3K

I haven't done one of these in a while, but I was just browsing through Youtube and found myself laughing my head off again, so I thought I'd give you a couple a chance to as well.

For those of you who don't know (or don't remember), MST3K basically takes really cheesy movies and makes jokes about them, all the way through the movie.  You know those annoying people who talk through a movie?  Imagine if the movie was horrible and the annoying people were actually funny.  That would be this group.

Here are a couple of hilarious pieces that I'm sure you will enjoy.

Saturday MST3K

I know I've been quite active this morning, both here and on Facebook, but we're going to be heading out soon to our first hockey game of the year!  Canucks-Oilers in a pre-season matchup that should be a lot of fun tonight.

So, I leave you with some humour that will hopefully brighten your day.

I'm going to include a couple more classic shorts that Joel (or Mike) and the bots riff on.

The first is "Appreciating Your Parents", an old instructional video showing kids how much they should appreciate what their parents do. While the sentiment is lovely, the implementation....well, let's just say it's quite hilarious. Of course, this was the 50s (or even 40s?), so the format is not surprising. Joel & the bots really go to town on it.



The next one is a Day at the Fair, a short from 1947 that Mike and the bots have a great time with. There were quite a few laugh-out-loud moments, and even an Oak Ridge Boys reference!

Opening line:

Narrator: "This is the fairground, where the fair is held."
Tom Servo: "Any questions so far?"

Friday Night MST3K

One of the things I spent my vacation day doing was watching an episode of Mystery Science Theater 3000. This one was Final Justice, another one starring Joe Don Baker.

Thus, I give you Favorite Moments from that episode, along with a Best of compilation.

This is some great stuff from Final Justice, especially all the Joe Don Baker riffs. They are actually pretty mean to him, but he really deserves it, at least in this picture (and Mitchell too).



And this is a "Best of" with three different movies, Prince of Space, Night of the Blood Beast, and Space Mutiny.



I haven't actually seen any of these three, and I couldn't stop myself from laughing, no matter how much I tried to stifle it.

Monday MST3K - For Your Viewing Pleasure

This time, I'd like to move away from the shorts for a little bit. Since most of the continuous clips on Youtube have intermission clips that aren't always as funny, I've grabbed a couple of "Favorite Moments" compilations.

Keep in mind that these clips are not continuous, so you won't really follow the plot too much, though you may get an idea of what's going on.

The first is from The Giant Spider Invasion (thanks for the idea, Sara!). I almost woke my wife up laughing at a couple of these. For a couple of the jokes, keep in mind that this takes place in Wisconsin



This is Mitchell, the last episode with Joel. The movie stars Joe Don Baker, Linda Evans, and has some of the funniest scenes in the series. Supposedly, Joe Don Baker has said that he'd love to kick our heroes' asses for this one. So you know they did something right!

More MST3K Shorts

Reaction to last night's MST3K post has been pretty positive, so I'm posting a couple more hilarious clips.

Those of you who are fans. What's your favourite episode? I would have to say mine is "Double 007" (I think that's what it's called), a 1960s movie starring Neil Connery, brother of Sean. Joel and the Bots have a lot of fun comparing Neil to his brother.

First, the most notorious MST3K short ever. "Mr. B Natural," a 20-minute short about how important music can be in your life (those of you who love music may find this especially funny). This has to be the worst (and thus, the best) short MST3K ever showed. Joel and the Bots have a field day.

Wednesday Night MST3K

Have you ever seen a really bad movie and started making fun of it to make it bearable? Then you've done the same thing that the guys behind Mystery Science Theater 3000 do...except that you didn't get paid for it. I'm not going to explain the whole concept behind the show (you can find that here). But I will say that the basic concept is a guy and two robots sitting in front of a really bad movie and cracking jokes about it. You see the three of them in silhouette in front of the screen, and the jokes come a mile a minute. Even if you don't like one joke, another one will be along in just a second and you'll probably laugh at that one.

Behind the jump are a couple of examples so you can see just how good this show was, when it was on in the 90s.

Most of the time, the producers chose a really bad or cheesy science fiction flick, though sometimes the movie was just a regular one. The common denominator was that the movie was horrible. Sometimes, the movies weren't long enough to fill the entire 2 hours, so they would have a short film before it. These were typically 50s-era educational films or stuff like that. I've chosen two of these shorts because they're self-contained, not to mention generally hilarious. Some of my older relatives may remember some of these.

The first one is a short film on hygiene.



I had trouble stifling my laughter so as not to make the wife wonder whether I was going insane or not.

The second one holds an even closer spot to my heart because it was produced in 1951 by my alma mater, Iowa State University, by the Home Economics department, and details how women were supposed to go to college to learn Home Ec and to find a husband.

I know they're long, but they're quite worth it. This was one of the funniest shows on television, and I really miss it.
