More UK bureaucracy madness

Though at least this time it's not about pedophiles!

According to the BBC, requesting a "reliable worker" is now considered discriminatory in the UK.  That's what Devonwood Recruitment Boss Nicole Mamo discovered when she tried to place a work advertisement at the JobCentre Plus.

This is a direct quote from the story:

Devonwood Recruitment boss Nicole Mamo said the Jobcentre Plus in Thetford, Norfolk, told her such an advert could be "offensive" to unreliable people.

Ms Mamo said: "I started to laugh. I said: 'That's crazy'."

A Department of Work and Pensions (DWP) spokesperson said the advert was worded as Ms Mamo requested online - but did not deny it differed in the Jobcentre.

Ms Mamo's company was advertising for a cleaning job at West Suffolk Hospital."

Are they serious?  Offensive to unreliable people?  Maybe if they got offended once in a while, they'd actually work on becoming more reliable!

This is simply ridiculous, but I'm getting used to seeing this kind of weirdness out of the UK.  Can anybody in the UK tell me whether the country is going down the tubes as much as these stories make it sound?

That being said, it looks like most organizations over there are saying that the ad as Mamo worded it should be fine, and it was placed online as she requested.

I heard about this from Randy Cassingham's awesome weekly e-newsletter, This is True.  Think this is a unique occurrence?  Think again.  Randy posted another story very similar to this.  In 2000!

  1. Yeesh. And I thought the US was getting ridiculous about political correctness! I had no idea how much worse things are across the Atlantic.

Thanks for another interesting post, David. You have such a talent for making outrageous news humorous and interesting. ;)

  2. You're welcome, Jenn! I know a lot of this society stuff I post is "I can't believe this is happening!" But I like to add a bit of a humorous take on it, even as I'm commenting on how stupid and deluded it is.

And you can keep the compliments coming as long as you like. :P
