One Hit Wonders of the 90s (Part 22)

Hello, dear reader. I have a favour to ask you. The original post begins after all of the asterisks, if you want to skip this.

Now that the One Hit Wonders of the 90s series is over, I'm not going to be doing my weekly revisiting of all these posts (I had to do that to add the new post to the bottom). Thus, I won't be able to catch any broken picture links or deleted videos any more. Yet I want these posts to be as good as possible.

Please, if you happen upon one of these posts, or if you take a walk through a whole bunch of them, let me know if you find anything that doesn't work. You can leave a comment, or you can send me a message using that handy "Contact Me" page linked above.

Also, feel free to let me know what you think of the post or any of the videos!

Thank you.

**************************

The heat wave has arrived!!! Yes, temperatures have reached the high 70s here in Vancouver, and people are sweltering. One citizen I stopped on the street to talk to said that it shouldn't be allowed to get this hot, as his air conditioning bill will go through the roof. He then proceeded to punch me in the gut and take my wallet. I guess he needed it more than I did.

I guess it was a rather rude question. I thought stepping on my face as I was writhing in agony was kind of adding insult to injury, though. What is happening to the senior citizens in our society these days, when they treat us like that???

But you know what's a good thing to take your mind off the heat? No, not holding the cat over the railing of your balcony until she shuts up (though that fantasy can wile away a few hours as well). It's listening to one-hit wonders!!!! That creamy mix of those songs that you love and wonder why the artist didn't continue on and the other songs that you wish could have been at Ground Zero of the Bikini Atoll nuclear testing grounds...BEFORE they were created.

This week, we close out 1995, and I can honestly tell you that I'm reasonably sure there is no rap this week. Yay!

There is, however, this guy:

I know he's a hit at the night clubs here. I'd dance with him.

As usual, you can find the list I'm taking these from here. I've totally relaxed on the issue of whether you can go look at this before I'm done or not.

Though that might have been last night's alcohol...

Anyway, on to #1!

1) Raekwon: "Incarcerated Scarfaces/Ice Cream" (#37)

Ok, I lied. But this is the only one! I promise!

I don't think I have to say anymore though, do I?

2) Groove Theory: "Tell Me" (#5)

Now *this* is more like it! Such a groovy groove of groovy goodness (too many G's?). She looks great, too, though that white outfit is a bit iffy. Or do I just have no fashion sense? This has got me grooving in my chair. Which actually looks kind of funny, which is why I don't publish a webcam image when I do this (not having a webcam helps with that too).

Chalk this up as a win!

3) Edwyn Collins: "A Girl Like You" (#32)

Yet another song that I didn't recognize from the title, but that I remember fondly when I hear it. This is an awesome song! And what an imaginative video, too. Ok, I could have done without that guy and his tongue at the end, but even so. It's very cool.

I wish I had an imagination like that. Then I could create something with reindeer prancing through a winter wonderland, snow falling softly in the peaceful night...before Rudolf takes his true revenge on his compatriots for all of the mocking of him they did about his red nose. Anything can be used as a weapon as we discover that Rudolf is not just the first reindeer with a red nose, but with opposable thumbs too.

Carnage is massive.

I call it "Silent Night, Rudolf's Bright...and Pissed Off"

It has a catchy ring to it.

4) Take That: "Back for Good" (#7)

Ah yes. Another song I have fond memories of. I can just imagine what the woman's response to this song is. "If you can't figure out what you did, then it's no use apologizing for it!" Followed by the flinging of clothes out onto the lawn.

And I see they're so depressed over their girl being mad at them that they're dancing in the rain. I think they should work on that thing called "contrition." Or maybe they think that, when they're all wet, with water dripping down their naked torsos, the girl will drop everything and jump into their arms? I guess that might work.

They really are having too much fun, though.

5) Goodie Mob: "Cell Therapy" (#39)

Ok, I lied again. I really didn't think a song named "Cell Therapy" from a group called Goodie Mob would be a rap song.

Feel free to beat me now.

What? I have to enjoy it too, you know...

6) Toadies: "Possum Kingdom" (#40)

Ahhhhhh, a palate cleanser. Well, kind of. This is actually a pretty good song but with bad clothes. And what venue are they playing in? The New York City sewer system? I don't understand why they're trying to hide a body, though. And the song does begin to drag after a while.

Almost as much as that body they're carrying around!

7) Selena: "Dreaming of You" (#22)

We probably all remember Selena's sad story, gunned down in the prime of her life and career. While the song doesn't do a whole lot for me, it was very popular at the time and millions of people loved her.

So I present this one to you joke-free.

And that's a wrap for 1995! We begin on a horrifyingly vulgar (though kinda funny in its own way) manner and end on a truly sad note.

But wipe away those tears, because it's onward and upward to 1996!

Just as soon as I clear this up.

Honestly, I was just *tired*

  1. I listened to the last 2 weeks together. Didn't like most of them. The first week I kind of liked #1.2 & 3. The second week I liked # 2.3.4 & 7. Guess that's better then I usually do.

  3. Hi Cupcake!

I guess I should refresh the definition of "one-hit wonder" since I haven't done so in a while.

A one-hit wonder is somebody who hit the US Billboard Top 40 chart just once in their career. They may have hit other Billboard charts (Modern Rock, R&B, Country, etc), but they only hit the mainstream Top 40 once.

This also means that they can be really big in Europe, but they still qualify. :)

You'll see me mention stuff like that from time to time.

And I was joking about the heat, because all of my relatives are in the Midwest and it's been 90 degrees there.

Though granted we haven't had rain in a while, our June was *very* rainy.

  4. I remember #2, 3, & 4 (I've been waiting for this one to show up & it finally did)! The beat for #5 sounds familiar but I don't recall the song. Of course I remember #7, think I listened to it one too many times growing up. :)

  5. Yeah, I knew #4 would be coming up sometime soon. I heard it somewhere a couple of weeks ago, I think.

    Glad you're enjoying the catch-up!
